Quintessentially British
In this is a wonderful contemporary naïve style print Kerry has captured the very essence of this very British of all spaces. Many places throughout the UK are regarded as ‘The Garden of England’. To Kerry however, it is the allotments and their peoples, where the dedication to growing stuff really comes into its fore.
In an oasis from the often suburban surroundings spring these little patches of joy. The personalities and the interests of the owners are reflected in their choice of what to grow and how they grow it. Many have small greenhouses and sheds (often painted in colours to match their personalities). Some plots are well kept with crisp clear borders while others are left a little wild and woollier. But you can sense the life that is contained within them. They are a touchstone of the passage of time.
A Sense of Community
In this fine art print this microcosm of society is reflected back to the viewer as is the idea of the turning of the seasons. Each plot is different from the next yet there are common elements which bring the whole together. Kerry takes the best of the seasons and pushes them up against each other on the canvas to a joyful end. Here Spring blossom can sit happily next to giant sunflowers for instance and Kerry is unapologetic for this bending of natures rules. It is her artistic licence which helps to reference all these spaces have to offer.
These little plots of land are the growing ground not just for fruit, veg and flowers but for the communities who come to be custodians of such spaces. None of us really own the land but we can feel like we do when we nurture it and best of all share it. This beautifully curated contemporary naïve style print is a fabulous reminder of this.
