This Artsy Lil’ Old Famous Fishing Town
In this art print of St Ives Cornwall, Kerry has taken great lengths to ensure all those familiar landmarks are there to be spotted! Using her own unique naïve style of work, St Ives Sunrise is an image of this often bustling (especially in the summer months) famous Cornish Town.
Historically known for its fishing it has over the last century become ever more affiliated to a contemporary arts scene. Home to the likes of Barabara Hepworth and Alfred Wallis (whose former homes are also depicted here) artists have flocked to this space because of the light. A light once experienced never forgotten! Its also boasts its very own Tate Gallery but there are many many more galleries dotted along the shores (plural) that every budget can take advantage of.
Pah! To Perspective This is Joyful, Whimsical, Fun!
In this whimsical depiction of the town Kerry has made sure to include the seafront with Smeaton’s pier and lighthouse, the Green Door (look it up) and the countless galleries and eateries to waiting here to be discovered, not to mention of course the inns and pubs and of course St Ia’s Church from which it is reputed that St Ives gets its name.
In typical Cornish fashion no two cottages are the same but there are many whitewashed walls and slate or flint tiles to be observed; the particular vernacular for this South West corner of England. Higgeldy piggeldy lanes wind their way down towards the foreshore, where boats linger for the tide before heading out (or in) for the day.
Kerry’s colours, use of light, pattern and texture are all carefully considered and lend themselves beautifully to the subject. Glowing pinks of the sky are reflected in the land and sea. Blues are used throughout to reference the coastal waters. Whites are then grounded by the use of slate greys and blacks to give much needed contrast and energy to the image so that your eye constantly moves from one area of the picture only to be directed to something else which has happily caught your attention.
This art print of St Ives Cornwall, will keep you smiling and looking and celebrating one of the best known most treasured parts of the UK.
