Description

Packing a Painterly Punch

For such a small village in a relatively remote part of Cornwall, Portcatho certainly packs an arty punch. In this seaside naïve artwork, Kerry has added to what is already well known to those who’ve visited, as a place for art. It’s a mecca for the creatively disposed or those who collect.

Kerry’s work has the naïve of the whimsy about it. Her buildings are playful depictions of the real ones that you can see if you were to visit the place. Her work has often been compared to that of the likes of Alfred Wallis and L S Lowry. She has definitely learnt from the masters of Naïve art. However’ she has developed her own unique way of portraying what she encounters. She is happy to abandon perspective and proportion in order to give her paintings their own original take on what is familiar. Making it less so and making you as the observer see more that you would have otherwise.

Colourful Creations

Colour plays a key role in her works. This like all her other works has a sense of careful curation. Keeping to the dominant colours of the village the blues of the seas and skies, the often used whites on the walls, she also playfully adds a few shocks of bright pinks and turquoises to keep the eye roaming around the canvas. She also adds softening tones of creamy yellows and coral pinks that keeps the scene warm and inviting overall. All created in many fine layers some scraped back into to reveal the colour underneath. Others sheer glazes.

It is a picture which perfectly captures this gorgeous little corner the Roseland Peninsula. With lots of little galleries, stunning coastal cottages and eateries that sell local – often fresh from the sea – this stunning little village has played to host to many an artist and Kerry is no exception. The light here is comparable to that found and much revered in St. Ives. No-one can pin it down as to why but may that adds to the magic of the place. No wonder then that Kerry chose this as the subject for this stunning seaside naïve artwork, its well worth a visit.
