Get Your Sea-faring Mits On This Little Bit of Coast
‘In With The Haul’, like its sister painting ‘Out for the Catch is a mainly blue coastal painting which plays on our expectations of what we will see when we visit the coast.
Conjuring up images of being beside the seaside, there is an energy to this acrylic painting which far exceeds its space on the canvas. It gives the impression of a bustling seaside harbour town or village which relies on its fishing traditions of living by the coast.
There is a sense of age, of days gone by too, with the whimsical way in which the buildings are depicted along the harbour front. Quirky and leaning but stamping their place across the picture. They are characters in their own right as are the fishing boats in the foreground. All key elements to what you would expect to find in a painting of this subject.
The Colours Of The Coast
The choice of sandy yellows and creamy stoney greys and vibrant blues is a deliberate one for the artist. Kerry has carefully chosen to limit her colour palette in this instance for maximum impact. Inky deep blues, streaks of bright turquoise and light silvery blues all intermingle to give a depth to the water as it laps against the hulls of the fishing vessels and the stone harbour walls.
Kerry also like to play with the paint on the surface. Her use of sgraffito and glazes means that the texture created is one of greater depth that invites us to look and then look again. Its not without doing this that you get a real sense that there is more to this artwork than first meets the eye. By keeping you engaged Kerry also invites you to consider the subject of her art for longer than you would otherwise do.
Her ultimate aim is to make you want to walk beyond the boundaries of the painting for you to continue the image in your own imagination with a limitless enthusiasm for doing so. Can you picture in your mind’s eye what lies beyond this delightful blue coastal painting?
