To See The Sea
This wonderful seaside harbour painting, ‘Looking Out To Sea’ (or should that be see – see what I did there?) is a beautiful depiction of a memory of a day spent by the coast.
Echoing previous works by the artist those such as ‘Waiting for the Tide’ and ‘The Tide’s Out’ and is also a sister painting to ‘The Boats In the Bay’. Painted in tandem these two images (‘Boats In The Bay’ & ‘Looking Out To Sea’) share a common colour palette and mood. While Kerry is passionate about colour she also knows when to hold back to get the right effect and create the right atmosphere intended for an image. Here she has executed this rule to perfection.
Nostalgic Memories in Captivating Colours:
While she has used a gentler palette than the primary cyans, magentas and yellows, she has used derivates of these to give balance to the painting overall. Soft blues, light reds ( ie pinks) and creams (rather than bright yellows) create a calm and welcoming atmosphere to the artwork.
Her interplay with light against darks its carefully edited for you, so that elements are highlighted to great effect: Like the play of light on the water or the underpainting laid down seen through a deeper colour; the roof tiles and stonework in places are good examples of this and give a depth to the work that can easily be taken for granted whilst enjoying the overall whimsical and inviting picture laid before you.
Whimsical is a good word to describe Kerry’s work. Her images are inviting ones created to make you smile and evoke memories of your own time spent in similar locations. Trips to the seaside are of course a British Tradition and one which she seeks to celebrate time and again in her works, including this beautiful seaside harbour painting.
