Time and Tide Wait for No Man

So its the artists job to capture the scene! ‘The Tide is Out’ is a harbour artwork print by British Naïve Artist Kerry Shearer. Boats, harbour walls and fishermans’ cottage all play a central roll. The gentle colour palette also plays a key role to the story telling behind the image.

Taken from the original artwork this is a faithful reproduction of the original painting on canvas. Like its sister image ‘Waiting for the Tide’ the peaceful, almost sleepy atmosphere within the image is created by the carefully chosen muted palette. Soft pinks and yellows highlight the character in the buildings while cool browns, brighter turquoises and slate greys help to ground them within the frame.

The curve of the textured harbour wall almost splits the painting in two, reminding the viewer that this is a place where the land meets the sea. It is also a reminder that we are at the mercy of the elements in whatever space we choose to call home and that often to work with rather than against them makes for a more peaceful existence.

Well isn’t everything in life? With ever shifting sands, like the ones portrayed here,  we find in ourselves the need to be adaptable. The artists is also asking this of the viewer as she chooses to ignore perspective and realistic dimensions but instead relies on a whimsical quirkiness in the way she presents the houses and homes in her work. There is truth but not reality here.

Kerry’s work is forever playful for many this brings a smile. They enjoy the ridiculousness of a building sitting on its side but this choice from the artist also serves many purposes. One is to pay homage to the likes of Alfred Wallis and Lowry, also self-taught also Naïve artists. And very importantly to convey the world in their own unique way as Kerry endeavours to do with each and every piece of art.
