Description

A Fragile Winter Beauty

This cold and frosty landscape painting encapsulates a world that lies sleeping through the winter months. Whether its through the use of a gentle colour palette or the depiction of skeletal trees and limited greenery, it points to the pared back environment of a winter landscape.

The title ‘Ghosts of Summer’ indicates the literal as well as metaphorical ‘dead’ of winter. It is the furthest point away from the warmer months. Just as ghosts are whispers of the past there is also the indication that Summer will return. The trees though bare still bear the outline of the canopy that will fill out as the warmer weather returns.

Pale and Interesting

With a suitably ‘bleached out’ colour palette Kerry has also carefully considered the message of the image. Almost monochromatic there are sharp punch points between the whites and the blacks this image uses.

In addition placing a solitary cottage within the picture also indicates the isolation and solitude that the winter can bring. Misty skies and a fading background hint at the cold temperatures that are likely to be found should you walk into the scene.

The stream in the garden boasts a few evergreens and seed heads which are an indication that warmer days lie ahead and that Spring will return again. As does the limited use of pastel blues and greens.

For all its frostiness there is also a gentleness to the image. This is a frozen picture in every sense. Cold yes but also a glance at a world that won’t stay the same for long. Its shouting to us to appreciate its fragile beauty.

Wait too long and it’ll be gone, just like this cold and frosty landscape painting when its discovered by its forever owners. Could that be you?
