Description
A National Treasure
This print of Houghton Mill and village is a truly lovely image. An open edition giclée print means its easily available and added to this is the fact that it comes ready presented on good quality paper with a sturdy mount, with a generous border.
The image is a playful landscape that is whimsical in nature. Its star attraction is of course the extraordinary Mill at Houghton which is owned by the National Trust and sits on the banks of the River Ouse in Cambridgeshire. A short stroll away brings you into Houghton village. Here you will see there are a number of eateries, including the Tea Rooms and The Three Horseshoes Inn as well as the Reading Room gallery. A village filled with characterful properties is a natural draw for Kerry who’s art is all about celebrating the architectural vernacular.
A Place of Whimsical Wonder
Kerry’s wonderful whimsical naïve approach to art, can be appreciated as you look even closer at the image. Timer-framed buildings playfully sit alongside their Victorian counterparts. Pantile roofs and thatch add a wonderful character to the place and have been recorded by the artist through her use of sgraffito in a few carefully chosen places on the image. This adds a richness and texture, a depth if you like, to the overall composition.
Look further and you’ll see that the tiniest of details have also been included. Individually painted bricks and teeny flowers demonstrate and attention to detail that makes the image all the richer, as it draws the viewer closer inviting a conversation between themselves, what they see on the page and the artist. This is what motivates Kerry to share these spaces through her art. Engaging with places that can be both familiar and unfamiliar when seen through another’s eyes.
This print of Houghton Mill and village is a vibrant, joyous celebration of the British countryside and all that it has to offer. A truly beautiful scene.
