Description
Kerry paints in her unique style and here she has captured one of the landmark destinations in Lincolnshire in this East of England Naïve artwork.
If you’ve ever visited you’ll know Stamford is truly a beautiful Georgian Town. It sits on the Welland River, just off from the Great North Road. This painting by Kerry celebrates all its history, all of its vibrancy. Its a modern day destination just waiting for you to discover. Indeed, its situated not far is the historic Burghley Estate; which is referenced in the famous bottle lodges that appear on the painting.
Her whimsical portrayal of recognisable buildings is key.
It helps to convey how the town has continued to develop and thrive over the many centuries of its long existence. You can spot the towers of local churches; eclectic mix of shops and homes and of course the famous George Hotel.
Each place has its own carefully conveyed character and you can see this is reflected in the differing techniques she employs to each of the buildings. If you look closely you can see each have tiny individual tiles and bricks, painstaking detail the artist feels necessary. Others have a many layered surface in which sgraffito has been used. Here you can spot the glowing underlayers which give the painting more depth. Acrylics have been extended, thickened and thinned across the surface of the canvas, in varying degrees where appropriate.
The colour palette is carefully considered to add to a sense of joy and pleasure, that a stroll around this splendiferous – as she likes to call it – town would be. Especially on a sunny blue sky day when the butter-coloured stone truly glows in the sunlight.
Timeless in its appeal this depiction of Stamford this is one which will keep you enthralled long after the sun has set over the town. If in reality the skies aren’t quite as blue nor the streets quite as quiet as depicted here, it’s a glowing reminder of the urban beauty that we often take for granted. There’s much to be celebrated in this joyful East of England Naïve artwork.
